Many thanks to Emily Temple of Hartwell  for hosting our October luncheon at the Waterfall Grille at Cateechee in Hartwell on Tuesday, October 19. Everyone who attended was very impressed with the restaurant and the beautiful country club setting and golf course. Emily says that she will be at home in Hartwell until probably next spring when she will move to her Wisconsin.

GG Luncheon at Isabelle's in Tallulah Falls  9-21-04

Beautiful Painting of Isabelle's Restaurant in dining room over mantle

Attending were Mabel Wallace, Frances Bowen, Kay Fulmer, Berna Spencer, Sue Moore, Nell Foster, and Kathryn Bradford. (Bettye Chambers took the photo, and then the card was full). Many thanks to Sue and Kathryn for hosting this one and for selecting the picturesque Isabelle's. Our food was great, too, especially Isabelle's chicken salad and fruit plate. Bettye gave a brief account of her recent  experiences in New York City and passed around a few mementos. No problems with the professional bussed in protesters in NY, but there was a problem with Steven the liberal gay steward on Air Tran coming home. ;- ) Naturally, some of the girls went shopping in the craft shop afterward. What
a lovely day!!

President pardons Thanksgiving Turkey in D.C.

Carrie Devorah, a professional photo journalist, recently took this photo and sent it to me from Washington, D.C. Carrie is the writer who found out about our "Operation Iraqi Children" project last year and wrote a story about that and our Sgt. Danny Denormandie which was published in Human Events Magazine. Carrie and I have become e-mail pals since then, and she frequently sends me her articles some of which are published in a number of different publications in this country and abroad. She was at the GOP National Convention in NYC and sent me some great photos which she made there. She is very conservative and very religious. Some months back her brother who was working in Israel was killed by one of Arafat's suicide bombers. Read Carrie's piece about Arafat's death. . .

News from Nell Foster, our resident Great Grandmother

11-17-04

Nell reports that she is off to North Carolina on November 18 to see her Great Grand Daughter Savannah who will be christened while Nell is there. However, she did report that she had voted early in the runoff election for GA Courts of Appeals Judge. Nell says to be sure to vote for Debra Bernes, who is the conservative one on November 23. Howard Mead is supported by the GA Democratic Party and former Governor Roy Barnes.

Nell also sent this very moving piece which is a great story and an example of God's hand in our lives. http://www.promiseofgod.com/sparrow

Groups Push for Diversity Among Teachers

Do you remember a few years ago Dekalb had a lottery because schools needed more white teachers in schools?  We were told that we could make a big difference in teaching the minority students.  Of course white students are the minority in Dekalb today.  This is a news article that turns that thinking all around. Been to Branson, MO, and had a fabulous time.  Saw some very good shows.  Went on a bus trip with friends from Toccoa.  My sister-in-law was my partner.  Back home and getting ready to go to the State DAR Board of Management meeting in Dublin, GA,--not Ireland (I wish).  Thought Emily probably told you about my trip to Branson.  Will try very hard to be at the Nov. Golden Girls Luncheon.

News from Berna Spencer - 10-18-04

Will miss Golden Girls tomorrow.  Am sure you all will have a great time.  Sorry I cannot be there.  We are now in Richwood, WV.  We came to Parkersburg, WV on October 13 for a short visit with my brother and sister.  Then we came to Glenville State College where Pete and I met; and where we both earned our first degrees in teaching.  We were there for homecoming and for Pete and his buddies from the 1958 undefeated football team to meet and replay all the games!  We all had a great time in spite of cold, rainy weather.  We are now visiting with his Mom and will be home soon.  -- Berna

TD Club honors coach T. McFerrin
(husband of Golden Girl Jane McFerrin)
October 13, 2004

South Gwinnett coach T. McFerrin was honored Monday by the Atlanta Touchdown Club at the Cobb Galleria as high school coach of the week.

McFerrin won his 300th game against Meadowcreek Oct. 1, before losing last Friday to Parkview 36-22.

Despite the loss, a highlight for McFerrin was the play of junior safety Jarred John- son, who had 15 tackles and two assists Friday. McFerrin said it's the highest individual tackle total in his seven years at South Gwinnett.

"He had an unbelievable game," McFerrin said.

The Comets are gearing up for a Region 8-AAAAA showdown Friday with Central Gwinnett. South and Central are among four teams tied for third in 8-AAAAA at 2-2.

South linebacker Josh Allen, who was in on 13 tackles (five solo) against Parkview, has missed two days of practice with bronchitis.

Just letting you know that I probably will not be attending even though I said I would.  I really wanted to come to this one, but as it happens, we are supposed to have company Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.  I do want to get back for one now and then.

Bettye the Blogger -- Back from the Convention in New York

Believe it or not I did survive the trip to the GOP Convention in New York City and did not even meet a protestor face to face. We cannot thank the NYPD enough since they did a fantastic job and made all of us frightened southern girls feel very safe. I now know why the NYPD, the NY Fire Fighters and Rudy Giuliani are such heroes in that city. Rudy gave the best speech of his life Monday night at the convention. Rumor has it that Rudy may be running for President in four years against Hillary. If you have not already done so, you can take a look at the Georgia Daily Diary pages by clicking here. There are five pages archived on that web site since the GOP Convention web site will be taken down soon. If you are a staunch Kerry supporter, we discourage your going to that site since it may cause a severe headache. ;- )

It was a wonderful experience, and I am so glad that I did attend even though I arrived home completely worn out. I had to forgo some of the social events since I spent easily four hours a day in my hotel room on the computer preparing these daily diary web pages which had to be sent to the webmaster every day by three p.m. Editing the zillions of photos which I took during all of the events was really time consuming -- but fun.

I am happy to be safely home again. This was the first time that I had flown since 9-11.

News from Martha McCullough of Stone Mountain - September 25, 2004

Thanks for the laugh (about manual typewriters). I learned and taught using manual typewriters for several years.  AND there have been many times when I wished I could return something and make a computer go away!  BUT I love computers also.

Sorry I missed the lunch on Tuesday.  I was in Mississippi with my Mother the week after Labor Day.  She has four chronic health problems and together they do her in from time to time.  She has ended up in the ER five times in the last 16 months--two of them last week.  The last time, she was admitted to the hospital and many tests were done and redone.  No new problems were identified. We hope she's going to be OK enough for now to continue living by herself and being independent.  She is so determined to do that.

Anyway, when I got back home, I was exhausted.  I certainly hope to make the lunch in October.

Thanks again for all you do for the Golden Girls.  You're such an inspiration!

News from Elsie Laurens of Sautee - September 18, 2004

Dear Friends,

Just wanted to tell you that on August 19th I had back surgery, caused by a fall in Canada in June which gave me compressed fracture on my 7th vertebrae in the thoracic area.  There is a doctor in Gainesville who is using a new procedure in which he inserts a needle into the fracture and inserts a mesh bag which is filled with pulverized bone which is supposed to reinflate the fracture to its near normal state.  He says it is doing its work at this point,  However I am still on tylenol a couple of times a day, but am mobile and beginning to do my normal routine.  Dick also had a bout with his back and on Monday after my operation we went to the ER via a neighbor who took us.  Neither of us could drive for two weeks.  He has been to the pain clinic three times, and received one shot of  cortizone and two weeks later a selective nerve root block (SNRB) in his lower back.  This last trip this week the doctor said he would wait about two weeks before giving another SNRB. He is back on his feet and moving much better.  We went to church last Sunday, which was a treat.

We have good neighbors who have been very good to us--food, errands and groceries, etc. and trips to the doctor.

Needless to say, we have slowed down a good bit.  Hope all is well with you.   Our computer is downstairs so we are way behind  catching up on the e-mails since we couldn't get down the steps for about 3 weeks.  Both of our doctors have given us an okay to go to Myrtle Beach where we have a time-share next week, so we will be gone from Sunday to Sunday week, Sept 26.  It seems the weather has cooperated and we plan to go for a week.  Hold  the e-mails or we'll never catch up!

Good wishes, Elsie and Dick

Ray Charles, known for tunes like Georgia on My Mind and What'd I Say, passed away Thursday morning.

Can't stop loving the legendary Ray Charles sound - USA Today -- Ray Charles, who virtually invented soul music by infusing R&B with gospel fervor, was often called the Genius for his significant influence not only on urban music, but jazz and country as well. Charles, 73, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at his Beverly Hills home surrounded by family and friends. His more-than-50-year career included dozens of hits and nearly non-stop touring, and gave him millions of other friends worldwide. Read more. . .
